Happy 18month birthday!
You are getting so grown up - I just wanted to stop a moment and reflect on who you are.
This morning you woke up at 5am and had a granola bar with daddy. You've been doing this the last month or so - waking up hungry, but going back to sleep after a snack. And after 17 months of only wanting Mommy at night time, you seem to prefer Daddy these days. When you see Mama, you ask to go "watch a show" instead of going back to bed. I think Daddy secretly loves the special attention you two give each other in the wee hours of the morning. He's never once grumbled about waking up with you. You are such a lucky boy.
Everyone keeps telling us how smart you are because you are so good at communicating. You have more words in your vocabulary than I can print and you *usually* only need to hear a new word 1-2 times before you pronounce it clearly.
You are such a happy boy - this morning when you work up, you were jumping in your crib and singing songs. When I dropped you off at Ann's house for daycare, you gave me a big hug and kiss and then blew kisses and waved as I walked out the door. I love it when you do that.
You love to play outside. You do not love getting your hands dirty, though. You really love playing basketball and you have surprisingly good form! Even with a full size basketball, you load your jump just like a pro and you make it into your hoop more often than Mommy makes it in hers!
You still love any tool on a stick - brooms, shovels, rakes, lacrosse sticks - sometimes I even catch you eyeing the cane of an elderly person. Some day you'll have to tell me what it is you find so fascinating.
Your diet has been doing great. You're such a good eater - I am so grateful for that. I can't imagine having such a limited diet AND being a picky eater. You LOVE chicken nuggets so much - I really hope you can have "normal" ones soon!
You have quite a sense of humor. Just yesterday you tricked me. I was scraping the windows of the car and you wanted me to open the gate to the backyard. I told you you'd have to wait and you got an idea. You sneakily went up the stairs to the deck and back down the back steps into the yard. You were quiet as a mouse until you reached the middle of the yard and called, "Mama!" and laughed a naughty little giggle, with your hands covering your mouth. What a stinker!
You love cars and make great noises. Regular cars are "cars" and trucks, buses, SUVs are often "car-cars." I get it. Told you you were smart.
You love reading books, especially Curious George! The Sesame Street book Grandma & Grandpa Johnson gave you for Valentine's Day is a favorite as well. We read it so often that you know the sounds to make before we turn to the right page! I even overheard Daddy reading it to you backwards the other night, just for some variety.
You are a mastermind when it comes to putting lids on things. You like to watch Elmo & Barney & Yo Gaba Gaba. (You owe us one, buddy.) But there are few things you love more than "shooz" and "boots." You can put them on yourself. You put them on when you're naked and when you're wearing footed jammies. You'll even wear mine! What a goof!
These are just a few of the things that make you you. I love seeing more of your personality shine through all the babyhood. And most of all, I feel so blessed that daddy and I don't just love you - we like you, too! We feel so lucky to be your parents. Thank you for making it so easy to do such a difficult job.
I love you, Benjamin Rush Hogan!
Mommy
